Changing Peoples’ Lives

What is consistent in all of the Community Coalition's efforts is the commitment to recognize and uphold the value of every person. Too often, the very process demeans people who receive services like those offered by Coalition member organizations. The process sets out to "help" a person but instead perpetuates devaluing attitudes and stereotypes.

Innovative Financial Model

Since its inception, the Community Coalition has continued to refine practices through which money can be more effectively raised and spent. They include:

  • Staffing one fundraising effort for four organizations instead of four separate ones.
  • Retaining a larger pool of involved people, so that the Coalition can implement a "sweat equity policy" in which volunteers are used extensively and overhead is kept low. For example, Coalition members' offices are utilized for meetings allowing more of the money raised to go to programs instead of rent.
  • Obtaining better prices for services and products by using the purchasing power of a larger group - from purchasing supplies and purchasing accounting services.
  • Offering donors one place to give in which they can support a wide variety of activities, and in which they realize that their dollars will be going where they are most needed at any given time. Also, providing options that a single group couldn't manage such as the spend-down endowment and property transfers.
  • Hosting larger events which can attract more and diverse people.
